Do we really need to keep nettles in the garden?

Nettle is probably the most uprooted plant without trial in our gardens. It stings, it spreads, it gives that persistent impression of an abandoned garden. And yet — as often with plants that we eradicate by reflex — it deserves our attention.

What nettle says about your soil

Before even talking about what it "produces", nettle (Urtica dioica) is a tool for reading the land.

Its massive and spontaneous presence almost always signals a soil rich in nitrogen and organic matter — often a sign of past human activity, repeated organic inputs, or a well-living topsoil horizon. It is not a weed that invades poor soil. It is a pioneer plant that colonizes a soil too rich to be left bare.

In other words: where nettles thrive, the soil has something to offer. The question is not to get rid of them. It is to understand why they are there.


What they do concretely

An ecosystem in themselves

Nettle is one of the most important host plants for the wildlife of temperate gardens. Several species of butterflies — the Admiral, the Small Tortoiseshell, the Devil's-bit Scabious, the Peacock — can reproduce only on it. Their caterpillars have no alternative. Removing nettles from a garden means removing a part of the reproductive chain of these species. Not reducing them. Removing them.

Beyond butterflies, they host specific aphids (which attract ladybugs and hoverflies), beneficial bugs, and a microfauna that is found nowhere else in the garden.

One of the most productive biomasses

Nettle grows quickly, cuts and regrows, and produces a considerable amount of green matter on a small area. This biomass is not a problem: it is a resource. In compost, it accelerates decomposition. In fermented manure, it is a recognized foliar biostimulant, rich in nitrogen and trace elements. In fresh mulch, it decomposes quickly and returns to the soil what it had drawn from it — a short, local loop, without inputs.


The limits, without minimizing them

Saying that nettle is useful does not mean it should be allowed to do whatever it wants.

It colonizes quickly

Urtica dioica is rhizomatous. Once established, it spreads laterally through its underground roots, not just by seeds. In disturbed or bare soil, it can cover several square meters in a season. In a small garden without active management, this can quickly become dominant — to the detriment of other more fragile, less competitive, often rarer and more ecologically interesting spontaneous plants.

It can mask a misreading of the soil

This is a point that is rarely mentioned: if nettles proliferate, it is sometimes a symptom of an imbalance — excess nitrogen, compaction, poorly managed organic inputs. Keeping them without trying to understand why they dominate is treating the symptom as a solution. Nettle indicates something. We need to read the indication, not just tolerate the plant.


The real question: where, not if

At Petites Terres, we do not seek to answer "nettle: yes or no". That question is the wrong one.

The right question is that of the zone : in what space is their presence consistent with the system's objectives?

On the edge of an orchard or a hedge? Often relevant — shelter, wildlife, biomass, without competing with crops. On the edge of a busy path or in an intensive vegetable garden? Probably needs to be framed. In a quiet, damp corner? Leave them alone.

It is not a question of tolerance or aesthetics. It is a question of design : each plant in the place where it fulfills a function without compromising others.

The nettle does not ask to be loved. It asks to be placed.
