Your flower beds are not ecological. Here’s why.
In many municipalities, urban flower beds still follow the same model, season after season. We tear out. We replant. We start over. Pansies, geraniums, begonias, plants produced in greenhouses, bought at garden centers, installed for a few months before being replaced.
The result is aesthetic. It is often the only stated objective. But ecologically, this model deserves to be seriously questioned.
A system that cannot live without us
These plantings never function on their own. They depend on a chain of continuous interventions : intensive horticultural production in heated greenhouses, transport to the point of sale, repeated manual planting several times a year, frequent watering to maintain species often poorly suited to the local climate, then tearing out and complete renewal a few months later.
In other words: what is presented as a living space is actually a space on life support. Remove human intervention for a year, and nothing remains. No transition, no natural evolution, just a vacant lot. A seasonal flower bed is not an ecosystem. It is a decoration that needs a municipal budget to continue to exist.
A real but limited ecological value
These horticultural species have been selected based on specific criteria: rapid flowering, visual uniformity, bright colors, transport resistance. Not for their ecological function.
Many double-flowered cultivars, begonias, some varieties of pansies, produce little or no accessible nectar: their extra petals often replace the reproductive organs that attract pollinators. Other species, selected for purely ornamental use, simply have not co-evolved with the local fauna and do not engage in any useful interaction with it. The result: visually saturated flower beds, but almost silent from the perspective of insects.
Another approach is possible — and it already exists
A public space can function differently, and several Belgian and European municipalities are already demonstrating this with beds of perennials and local species.
Well-chosen perennials settle in once and last: less maintenance, less watering, and above all a permanent ground cover, thus less erosion, less evaporation, and fewer weeds to manage chemically or manually.
Native species add a second level of coherence: adapted to the local climate and soils without artificial irrigation, they integrate into the ecological interactions already present (local pollinators, beneficials, soil microfauna) instead of being foreign to them. Year after year, the system gradually becomes more autonomous, instead of remaining dependent on a cycle of perpetual replacement.
Aesthetics are not the problem
It is not about opposing beauty and ecology — that would be a false alternative, and probably the best excuse for not changing anything.
The real question lies elsewhere: why continue to maintain spaces that require so much energy, water, and public budget to remain artificially stable, when equally attractive alternatives exist and demand infinitely less? A well-designed mass of perennials and native perennials is no less beautiful than a bed of begonias. It is simply beautiful in a different way — and it continues to be so without needing to start all over again.
The real question
Should we continue to design our living spaces as temporary decorative objects, to be thrown away and replaced like urban furniture?
Or can we imagine arrangements capable of evolving over time, truly taking root, while fulfilling more ecological functions?
A truly sustainable space should not need to be recreated every three months.
